1. Choosing the Right Equipment: GoPro vs. Smartphone
GoPro or Action Cameras: These are ideal for water-based filming because they are rugged, waterproof, and designed for action. Models like the GoPro HERO series come with excellent image stabilization, high-quality resolution (up to 5K), and a range of accessories that make mounting and positioning easier.
Smartphone: If you don’t have a GoPro, a smartphone can work. Modern smartphones have high-resolution cameras, but you’ll need to invest in a waterproof case and a sturdy mount.

2. Essential Accessories for Filming in a Dinghy
The best mounting systems come with the go-pro series of cameras. Ideally you want to use a suction cup mount with lever arm that you can attach to the aft of the boat beside the rudder gudgeons. Ensuring to attach a safety line from the camera to one of the traveller eyes.
Gopro standard sticky mounts can be used to attach to the bow however this POV is not optimal from a coaches perspective.
If using your phone to film the same suction cup and arm can be used but you will need to buy a conversion kit from amazon in order to attach the phone to the gopro mount.
If you have access to a 360-degree camera, like the GoPro Max, you can capture an all-encompassing view.
3. Camera positioning
A normal POV or wide angle can be used depending on the camera you are using. The goal is to get realistic proportions while ensuring enough is in frame to analysis the sailing itself. Position so that atleast both hands are visible when hiking and the rudder is in full view (if filming from aft).
